The Cisco 4G LTE NIMs (Figure 1) provide an enterprise-class 4G multimode LTE wireless WAN (WWAN) solution. With Cisco ISRs, 4G LTE is a powerful primary WAN access solution. Businesses can now run applications such as interactive video and telepresence on a primary 4G LTE connection, which is up to 50 times faster with far lower latency than third-generation (3G) links. These 4G modules support the latest Third-Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 9 LTE standards. Cisco 4G multimode LTE WWAN NIMs provide persistent, reliable LTE connectivity with fallback and transparent handoff to earlier technologies. The cards provide bandwidth to support high-definition (HD) and peer-to-peer (P2P) video calls, providing customers with an excellent mobile broadband experience. The Cisco 4G LTE WWAN NIMs are tightly integrated with the services provided on the award-winning Cisco 4000 Series ISR devices, which deliver secure data, voice, video, and mobility services. The Cisco 4G LTE WWAN NIMs are supported on the modular Cisco 4200, 4300 and 4400 Series ISR devices.

●   Cisco LTE 2.0 NIM for Global (NIM-4G-LTE-GA): Multimode LTE for carriers that operate LTE on 800-MHz (band 20), 900-MHz (band 8), 1800-MHz (band 3), 2100-MHz (band 1), or 2600-MHz (band 7) networks; the multimode LTE Global (Europe, Australia, etc.) NIMs are backward-compatible with 3G Dual-Cell-high-speed packet access plus (DC-HSPA+), high-speed packet access plus (HSPA+), high-speed packet access (HSPA), Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS), Enhanced Data GSM Environment (EDGE), and General Packet Radio Service (GPRS).

●   Cisco LTE 2.0 NIM for North America (NIM-4G-LTE-NA): Multimode LTE for carriers that operate LTE on PCS 1900-MHz (band 2), 850 MHz (band 5), 1700- or 2100-MHz (band 4 AWS), or 700-MHz (band 17); the multimode LTE North America (AT&T, Canada) NIMs are backward-compatible with DC-HSPA+, HSPA+, HSPA, UMTS, EDGE, and GPRS

With enhanced data rates and improved latency, WWAN services are an ideal way to replace or supplement traditional wire-line services. 4G LTE WWAN data services offered today have theoretical limits of CAT3 100 Mbps on the downlink and 50 Mbps on the uplink. The actual data speed depends on the service provider’s network. 4G LTE WWAN data services are an alternative in areas in which broadband services are either not available or very expensive. Cisco is building on these performance milestones and adding support for wireless to our wide variety of WAN interface alternatives.

What version of the Cisco Prime enterprise and service provider management application supports the Cisco ISR4221-SEC/K9 Series?

Cisco Prime 2.0 supports the Cisco 4000 Series. Support for the Cisco 4221 ISR will be available in Cisco Prime 3.1.

Do all four ports with both RJ-45 and Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) front panel Gigabit Ethernet (FPGE) connections support failover?

Yes. You can configure auto-failover on any of the front-panel ports with both RJ-45 and SFP connections. When auto-failover is configured, if the primary interface type fails, either RJ-45 or SFP, the other media type becomes active and allows traffic to continue over the backup physical connection. In this scenario, the backup connection needs to be connected with the same speed and duplex as the primary connection.Note that the auto-failover feature as described does support one Gigabit Ethernet interface acting as a backup to another. The two physical connections available on a single Gigabit Ethernet interface simply provide failover if a link fails.

Is a console port available on the Cisco ISR4221-SEC/K9?

Yes, the Cisco ISR4221-SEC/K9 router has a combo RJ-45 port for AUX and Console.

In the case of control-plane memory, can I put, say, a 4-GB DIMM in one slot and a 2-GB DIMM in the other slot?

No. Like the Cisco 3900 Series, the 4000 Series expects both DIMM slots to have the same size of memory; as an example, it must have either 4-GB memory in both slots for a total of 8 GB of control-plane memory, or 2-GB memory in both slots, for a total of 4 GB of control-plane memory. This setup is necessary because these platforms interleave memory devices for faster access.

How many dual inline memory modules (DIMMs) does the Cisco ISR4221-SEC/K9 have?

 The Cisco ISR4221-SEC/K9 has no DIMM slot for memory expansion.

Can I use the enhanced high-speed WAN interface cards (EHWICs) available on the Cisco 1900, 2900, and 3900 Series ISRs on the Cisco 4000 Series ISRs?

EHWIC modules available on the Cisco ISR Generation 2 (ISR G2) routers will not work with the 4000 Series ISRs. The 4000 Series is targeted at new branch-office environments requiring high bandwidth and greater application performance, making most EHWICs unapplicable. Also, the newer NIM architecture allows for faster, more capable modules on a high-end platform. .

Can the NIMs or service modules available on the Cisco 4000 Series work on the Cisco ASR 1000 Series?

The service modules will work with the Cisco ASR 1000 Series. Select NIMs will also work with the ASR 1000 Series.

Are the Cisco ASR 1000 Series Shared Port Adapter (SPA) cards supported on the 4000 Series ISRs?

No. SPAs are not compatible with the 4000 Series ISRs.
